Adapted Sports League
The La Crosse Central High School Adapted Sports League program reflects the school’s strong commitment to inclusion, belonging, and meaningful participation in high school athletics. As part of the RiverHawks community, students involved in adapted sports are valued members of a competitive league that emphasizes both skill development and equitable access to athletic experiences.
The RiverHawks compete within the Mississippi Valley Conference Adapted Sports League (ASL), which holds the distinction of being the first adapted sports league of its kind in the state of Wisconsin. Competing in this established and pioneering conference provides students with meaningful opportunities to engage in interscholastic athletics while being part of a program rooted in innovation and inclusion.
The league uses modified rules and supports to ensure that students with a wide range of abilities can actively participate and experience success. These adaptations create an environment where competition remains meaningful while prioritizing safety, engagement, and individual growth.
The program is led by dedicated coaches who are district employees, providing consistency, expertise, and a strong connection to the school community. Throughout the school year, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports, including indoor soccer in the fall, floor hockey in the winter, and indoor wiffleball in the spring. This seasonal structure allows students to build skills, stay active year-round, and experience different types of team-based competition.
At Central, inclusion goes beyond simply offering participation opportunities. The program fosters a culture where all athletes are respected and celebrated for their contributions. Students learn and practice not only sport-specific skills and the value of physical fitness, but also essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, self-advocacy, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Through practices and competitions, athletes build confidence, develop independence, and form strong peer relationships.
The Adapted Sports League also strengthens school community and pride. By competing as the RiverHawks, students are recognized as legitimate high school athletes, reinforcing the belief that athletics should be accessible to all.
